Life transitions

Life Transitions in Lake Orion and across Michigan

A transition is not only a change of circumstances. It is a period in which the old version of your life has ended and the new one has not yet arrived, and identity, routine, and relationships are all in motion at once. Counseling gives that in-between a structure, so decisions get made from steadier ground rather than from exhaustion.

Who this helps

Separation and divorce, including co-parenting and the loss of a shared future
Career change, redundancy, retirement, or a role that no longer fits
Mid-life questions: the sense that the life you built needs re-examining
Becoming a parent, an empty nest, or caring for aging parents
Relocation, immigration, and the loneliness of starting over somewhere new
Decision fatigue when every option feels like the wrong one

How the work goes

Grief for what is ending

Even a chosen change carries loss, and transitions stall when that loss is not acknowledged. Some of the work is grief work: naming what has ended, including the parts you are relieved to leave, so they stop pulling at the new life from underneath.

Values before plans

Plans made in a crisis tend to be reactions. Counseling slows the decision down long enough to ask what actually matters to you now, which may not be what mattered ten years ago, and then builds practical next steps from that rather than from pressure.

Steadiness while things are unsettled

Between the old life and the new one there is a stretch where nothing is certain. Sessions give that stretch a weekly anchor: a place to process what happened this week, regulate the stress that comes with it, and keep moving without rushing.

What sessions look like

Sessions are 60 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in person in Lake Orion or by secure telehealth anywhere in Michigan. Transition work is usually a defined season of counseling rather than open-ended: often a few months around the change itself, with the option to return at the next turn. The fee, the deposit, and out-of-network reimbursement are explained on the fees page.

Questions people ask

I have not decided whether to make the change. Is counseling still useful?

That is often the most useful time. Counseling is not there to push you toward leaving or staying; it clarifies what you are weighing, what you are afraid of, and what you would need to be true either way, so the decision becomes yours instead of the circumstances'.

Do you work with couples going through a separation?

The practice offers individual counseling. During a separation or divorce, Lizanne works with one partner on their own experience and decisions, and can recommend a couples or family therapist when joint work is what is needed.

How is this different from a life coach?

Coaching focuses on goals and accountability. Counseling with a licensed professional counselor holds the emotional and psychological side as well: grief, anxiety, old patterns, and the history that shapes how you handle change. Lizanne also holds a coaching certification, so the practical side is not neglected.

Can this be done by telehealth?

Yes. Transitions often mean a full calendar or a new location, and telehealth removes the commute. Sessions are held over a secure video link with clients located in Michigan.
